I am so excited to being doing the Summer Learning Journey this year. This first ever activity for the Summer Learning Journey 2019-2020 is about pacific navigators. Pacific natives were exceptional people. In 2017, controller, Nainoa Thompson aged 66, used an ancient Polynesian way finding skill to steer around the entire world. What's even more crazy is he did it in two canoes. If that is not crazy enough, he started his trip around the world in 2013 and landed on Aotearoa in 2015. That's two whole years! So I was asked to provide you with the 10 food items that I would bring on a a boat.
- Canned beans/lettuce/tuna/meat etc because it wont go rotten for a long time
- Dried fruits because they are easy to store and are preservable
- Air sealed food (like chips) as it isn't exposed to any of the elements that would spoil it
- Raw rice is a good option because it will never rot as long as it is preserved properly
- Wheat flour because simply adding water and baking it over a fire is a good way of making bread
- MRE's because they are designed to last a long period of time, and they have dessert!
- Dry lentils /beans because they last very long dry and are easy to cook
- Honey because it can help you when you're sick, and it's not exactly unhealthy
- Ghee (clarified butter) lasts long if you store it correctly and you can use it as an alternative for butter
- Dried pasta - it is very easy to cook and if you need to, just eat it raw!
- BONUS - Dried vegetables and fruits because they are healthy, easy to cook and tasty
EXTRA
Tools/other things I would bring
- An advanced water purifier so I wont run out of water
- A fishing rod for catching fish so that I have bunches of food and wont starve
- First aid kid for if I injure myself, I can use it
- A comfortable hammock with a feathery pillow so I can sleep comfortably
- Lots of clothes so I can change if my old ones get dirty
- Books/toys because I might get bored and they would perfectly suit my preference
- A spear to defend myself against hostile creatures
- Life jacket or floatie as I may go overboard, and it may save my life
- An extra mini raft just in case my boat sinks or breaks
- Finally, an album/journal so I can write about my journey and voyage along the way
Morena Vitaraag,
ReplyDeleteI am Kueni and I’m working as a blog commenter on the Summer Learning Journey this summer working with the Ako Hiko cluster. Have you done the Summer Learning Journey
before? I’m looking forward to reading your posts and the other bloggers' posts from the Ako Hiko cluster, over the next few weeks.
I see that you are filled with enthusiasm now that the Summer Learning Journey has started and so am I. I enjoyed reading not only about your 10 food items that you would bring on your ocean voyage with Nainoa, but also the extra research you have done about Pacific natives. Did you also know that Nainoa was the very first Polynesian to ever practice the art of wayfinding on long distance ocean voyages? So he is a pretty impressive man!
I really like that you have gone above and beyond and included “extra” things that you would bring with you on your trip too which would also be super handy on a 3 week ocean voyage. You would be super prepared if you were called up to go a sailing adventure, much like Nainoa. Have you ever been on something similar to the boats/ canoes that people such as Nainoa travelled on during his voyage?
Blog you soon!
Kueni.

ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic piece of writing, you have done an incredible job, I loved reading your list of food especially the extra list.
Hi Vitaraag,
ReplyDeleteI liked how you said that you would bring a lot of preserved and packaged food, since food liked that'll last longer. I also liked how you included 10 more things that you'd bring that'd help you survive. If you could pick more food items, what else would you want to bring?
